ELSAH SECTION
The PAWS station in Elsah, N9YN, is now fully operational. We are able
to communicate on 160m-70cm in all modes with multiple operating positions
and antennas.
Become a Principia College HAM and join the Club!
We welcome those that might want to become Ham radio operators. Contact
Dave Cornell (W9LD), club advisor, for a schedule of Ham club meetings.
The TECHNICIAN Amateur Radio license test, required for ham radio operation,
is not that difficult. The Tech and higher study guides are available from
Dave Cornell, and they are also available from the ARRL web site, Amazon,
etc. (We have 7 Tech study guides available). A great practice test site
for the written tests is
http://www.QRZ.com
We have three new hand held 2-meter radios that can be checked out by licensed
club members from the Physics Dept. One 75 watt 2 meter car transceiver
with a car magnetic mount antenna is also available for loan. The loans
will be a library type loan, and must be returned/renewed at 2-week intervals.
We operate a powerfull repeater (N9YN/R) on 145.310 pl 79.7 that covers the entire
St. Louis area. The club often gathers on the repeater at 10pm each evening.
The club sent down a team for Hurricane Katrina Relief in September, with
sparkling new radio gear installed in a Prin van, and we found that we
were in the right place to offer critical communications support for the
relief effort. We were assigned by the Red Cross to the Emergency Operations
Center in Hancock County, Mississippi, a most devastated area. This was
a life-changing event for those who participated, and it is described in
some detail in the recent (Winter 2006) Principia PURPOSE.
